Psychotherapy for Depression
Psychotherapy is recommended often,as the first and formemost treatment recommended for depression. Called "therapy" for short, the word psychotherapy actually involves a variety of treatment techniques. In
psychotherapy, a person with depression talks to a licensed and trained mental health care professional who helps the person identify and work
through the factors that may be triggering their depression.
Sometimes these factors work in combination with heredity or chemical imbalances in the brain to trigger depression. Taking care of the psychological and psychosocial aspects of depression are just as important as treating its medical cause.
How does psychotherapy help?
Psychotherapy helps people with depression by:
- Bringing about an understanding of the behaviors, emotions, and/or ideas that may contribute to his or her state of depression.
- Identify and understand any life problems or events - such as major illness, a death in the family, lossing a job, or a divorce - that may contribute to their depression. This includes helping the patient understand which aspects of the problem they may be able to improve upon or solve.
- Helping regain a sense of control and pleasure in their life.
- Helping assist the patient in learning coping techniques and problem-solving skills.
